Purple Honey: A Sweet Appalachian Mystery

Purple honey ain’t something you reckon to find in the mountains. But folks from these parts of North Carolina know you find it at the coast and right here in Appalachia.

For generations, beekeepers have opened a hive to discover honey unlike anything they expected to find. Instead of golden-hued honey, they discover rich shades of violet and deep plum.

Seems like that ought not happen in nature. Ain’t nary a soul can say why it happens, and that’s only part of what makes it special. Oh, them scientists are all in a dither with speculation, but they can’t prove none of it.
